Museum fur Gegenwartskunst Siegen Press release:

"The artist Diango Hernández (born in Kuba 1970, has been living in Düsseldorf for the past years) will be the recipient of the City of Siegen’s sixth Young Artist Award in autumn 2009. The Young Artist Award and was founded by the City of Siegen in 1980 to support and promote young artists. The award is accompanied by an exhibition in the Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen and a catalogue.

The expert jury, which was made up of Prof. Ursula Frohne (tenured professor of art history at the University of Cologne), Jörg Heiser (art critic), Veit Loers (curator of the Rheingold Collection), Prof. Peter Piller (fifth Young Artist Award laureate and tenured professor of artistic photography at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig), and Dr. Eva Schmidt (artistic director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen), voted with one voice for the artist Diango Hernández.

The jury statement included the following declaration: “Diango Hernández, who was born in Sancti Spiritus in 1970 in Kuba and has been living and working in Düsseldorf for several years now, has a convincing artistic approach that is both enlightened and touches upon the engimatic and mysterious. In his gigantic installations, which bring together found objects and materials, drawings and film projections, text and sound into condensed ensembles, the artist combines politics and poetry in a very special way typical of Diango Hernández.”
